The closure of Edmonton’s Ukrainian Newcomer Furniture Warehouse brought a mix of emotions to those involved.

“We’re thrilled to have surpassed our goals, providing furniture for thousands of newcomers to Alberta,” the group wrote on Facebook.

“It’s also a tough moment as we’ve built a strong community and amazing friendships at the warehouse while serving those in need.”

Sunday was the final day for the community service that provided free furniture to newcomers settling in Alberta after fleeing the war in Ukraine. More than 16,000 Ukrainian newcomers benefited from it.

But the need diminished in recent months, leading to the decision to close down.

Created by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Alberta Provincial Council, the service’s first day was April 29, 2022. Its base of operations was a training facility space provided by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Lodge 146.

“A shoutout to our dedicated staff and volunteers for their unwavering support over the past two years,” the Facebook post continued. “Your passion and commitment have made a significant impact. We also thank all our donors who made efforts to recycle, repurpose, and reuse their furniture. Donations have been placed in good hands.”

The Ukrainian Newcomer Furniture Warehouse is directing individuals who are struggling and need support, or anyone with donations, to reach out to Habitat for Humanity.
