Two more players with local ties hit CFL rookie camps this week.

Herman high school product Kaine Stevenson signed a free-agent deal with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats while University of Windsor Lancers’ offensive tackle Owen Mueller signed a free-agent contract with the Toronto Argonauts.

Both were passed over in last week’s CFL Draft where Lancers’ offensive guard George Una was taken in the first round with the sixth pick overall by the B.C. Lions and offensive guard Jaxon Morkin, who is a Vista Academy high school product, went to the Edmonton Elks with the first pick of the fourth round. Both players signed in time to take part in rookie camp.

The six-foot, 200-pound Stevenson spent four seasons at the University of Guelph. He started as a running back before being moved to receiver in his junior seasoned and posted 48 catches for 547 yards for an average of 11.4 yards per catch and three touchdowns.

The six-foot-five, 285-pound Mueller was invited to the CFL Regional Combine and showed enough to earn a spot at the main combine where he was one of the top performers at his position.

Along with the six-foot-two, 313-pound Una and the six-foot-three, 305-pound Morkin, Mueller helped the Lancers average 32 points a game and 443.6 yards per game last season. 

Running back Michael Herzog, who is a Holy Names high school product that played in Michigan at Hillsdale College, was also taken in last week’s draft by the Montreal Alouettes. He has yet to sign and is attending free-agent rookie camp with the NFL’s Detroit Lions this weekend.

Canadiens drop opener

If the opener is any indication, goals will be at a premium in the Schmalz Cup final.

The Clarington Eagles scored the game’s lone goal midway through the third period in a 1-0 win over the visiting Lakeshore Canadiens on Thursday.

With it, the Eagles lead the best-of-seven Provincial Junior Hockey League final 1-0 with Game 2 on Saturday at the Atlas Tube Centre at 4 p.m.

The Canadiens got goalie Boe Piroski, who made 24 saves, to the bench with just over two minutes to play in regulation, but could not produce the equalizer in a game that featured just one minor penalty.

Clippers drop Red Devils

The Windsor Clippers scored in a win in the club’s first road game of the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B league season on Thursday.

Vance Dalpe had a goal and added three assists as the Clippers scored an 8-5 road win over the Wallaceburg Red Devils.

Mason Myers-Whiteye, Kale Couvillon, Jacob Cianci, Nathan DeThomasis, Kane Murphy, Niko Speck and Logan Gough added single goals for the Clippers (2-3-0) while goalie M.J. Schwager made 37 saves against the Red Devils (3-5-0), who were outshot 50-42.
