Edmonton police say a man has been charged after following a student into Archbishop O’Leary High School Wednesday morning.

EPS says around 9 a.m., two men reportedly followed a student to the school.

The student then reportedly entered the school, and one of the men followed.

The School Resource Officer (SRO) was able to take the man into custody with help from the SRO at St. Cecilia — the neighbouring junior high.

Edmonton police has since charged the 36-year-old man with trespassing and resisting arrest.

He has been released with conditions, which includes not going near Archbishop O’Leary High School.

The incident comes days after the Edmonton Public School Board (EPSB) voted to reinstate SROs, after their program had ended four years ago.

EPSB has seen criticism surrounding their vote, as advocates say SROs put marginalized and racialized students at risk.

The Edmonton Catholic School Division never removed its SRO program, and 13 officers are present in 16 schools.
