QUEBEC — The Legault government has said no to a request from a coalition of seniors to open CLSCs seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

The Coalition Avenir Québec also refused to recognize a right to home care.

During a summit organized Wednesday in Quebec City, the Coalition pour la dignité des aînés called for CLSCs to be a main gateway to obtaining home support services.

The group also asked that CLSCs be open permanently.

Québec solidaire MNA Christine Labrie brought the demand to the National Assembly.

“It is a poor understanding of the vision of the CLSCs,” Minister Responsible for Seniors Sonia Bélanger said in response.

“The CLSCs are there for the organization of local services, in a community. In the word CLSC, there is the C for the community component, so these are not emergency services, they are not 24/7 emergency services.”

QS returned to the charge by proposing a motion without notice that echoed the other request of the Coalition: the adoption of a framework law on the maintenance of autonomy, which would set out the right to home care and the right to affordable and adapted housing.

The government refused to debate the motion.
