It’s a cheaper solution than buying new AirPods, but it’s still a lot.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Pro finally switched to USB Type-C, and Apple is slowly removing the older Lightning connector from the rest of its products. The AirPods Pro already recieved an upgrade with USB Type-C charging on the charging case, but if you already have second-generation AirPods Pro, you can now get a new case for slightly less money.

Apple has begun selling a replacement charging case for the second-gen AirPods Pro. This one has a USB Type-C port, meaning that you can use a USB Type-C cable to charge them instead of a Lightning cable. Apple did already release an upgraded model of the AirPods Pro with a USB Type-C port instead of Lightning, but those were brand-new AirPods, and you probably don’t have much of an incentive to substitute your whole earbuds just to use a different charging port. With this, you can just get the new charging case, take your AirPods out of the old charging case, and put them inside the new one. It’s a simple, painless upgrade, and the case still supports the same MagSafe charging as well.

Apple has long sold replacement charging cases for AirPods because it’s an essential part that people might occasionally lose. Still, whether you want to get a new case just to take advantage of that USB-C port is certainly a question. The replacement case costs $99, making that an expensive replacement for something that you probably don’t need. If your Lightning cable still works fine, there’s no reason for this—in fact, we’d argue that it’s probably a better idea to substitute the cable if it’s broken than to substitute the whole case. It’s neat, but it’s not a necessary purchase unless something actually happened to your charging case.

If you still want to check it out, you can go into Apple’s online store and buy it. That $99 price tag is a lot, but it’s still $150 less than buying a completely new second-generation AirPods Pro. There’s still no USB Type-C version of the regular AirPods, and likewise, there’s no replacement charging case appreciate this one either.
