Just like the previous iterations of the M series processors, the M4 generation will also spawn multiple variations for different form factors and workflow demands. At the moment, Apple is said to be nearing final work on at least three variations of the M4 family. The baseline model is codenamed Donan, while mid-tier models – supposedly the Pro and Max trims – are being developed under the Brava moniker. The most powerful configuration that will most likely arrive under the M4 Ultra branding, is internally going by the name Hidra.
As far as the upcoming Mac Mini goes, it will be released in two versions. The entry-level machine will come armed with the baseline M4 variant aka Donan. There will also be more powerful trim on the table that draws power from the Brava model possibly packing more CPU and GPU cores. If Apple’s existing line-up is any indication, this configuration will be fitted with an M4 Pro processor.
Apple’s release schedule has been rather unpredictable lately, but if Bloomberg’s reporting is anything to go by, the Mac Mini refresh should arrive later this year or the next. There is little clarity about other upgrades, but if we were to take an educated guess based on the industry standards, a jump to Bluetooth v5.4 and Wi-Fi 7 won’t be out of character. As far as design goes, there’s no reason to expect any major refinements.
