Samsung released the first mainstream folding phone in 2019 with the original Samsung Galaxy Fold. Since then, the company has remained a leader in this segment, but that doesn’t mean that other companies haven’t done it. Everyone from Motorola to Google has come out with their own foldable phones over the past few years. OnePlus has now joined the party with its very own OnePlus Open.
OnePlus has announced the OnePlus Open, its latest smartphone and first folding phone, after months of rumors, leaks, and also some teasing from OnePlus itself. Its cover screen size is 6.31 inches, and it folds out to reveal the foldable 7.82-inch display, with a hinge design that OnePlus says uses less components than other hinges, with 69 parts in comparison to the industry average of over a hundred parts. Its design is wider than what we’ve seen in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup, and this is no surprise — OnePlus is a subsidiary of Oppo, which made headlines back in 2021 with the release of the Oppo Find N, a foldable phone with a similar form factor.
The phone uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, as well as a 4,805 mAh battery with 67W charging. There’s also a 48MP primary camera on the back, which uses something called “pixel stacking” to improve camera quality, as well as a 48MP ultra-wide camera and a 64MP telephoto lens with 6X optical zoom and up to 120X digital zoom. It also runs OxygenOS 13.2, based on Android 13, though we expect an update to Android 14 sometime soon.
The OnePlus Open is now available for pre-order, and the phone will start at a steep $1,699 in Emerald Dusk and Voyager Black colorways — it’s up to you to decide whether you like this better than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, which costs just a tad bit more.
