Qualcomm just announced its Snapdragon X Elite PC chipset, featuring the company’s ambitious Oryon CPU. When will this CPU come to smartphone chipsets, though? Well, the chip designer has given us an answer.
Qualcomm announced at its Snapdragon Summit that the Oryon CPU will come to a smartphone chipset in 2024. The company didn’t dish out further details, save for hinting at a launch at Snapdragon Summit 2024.
Nevertheless, the late 2024 launch window strongly suggests that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be the first chipset with Oryon CPU cores. The newly announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 still sticks with Arm CPU cores, though.
This will mark the first time since 2016’s Snapdragon 820 and 821 that Qualcomm’s smartphone chips have featured custom CPU cores. Either way, those hoping for performance to rival iPhones should keep an eye on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
