Need a cheap and secure password manager? Proton Pass Plus just got a permanent 50% price reduction. A year of service now costs $24—the equivalent of $1.99 a month. The reduced pricing is available to new subscribers and will automatically apply to current Proton Pass Plus subscriptions.

Proton Pass Plus launched in mid-2023. Early adopters received a nice introductory offer, but the annual fee quickly climbed to $48. Other password management services, such as 1Password and LastPass, cost $36 a year.

Evidently, the premium price of Proton Pass Plus didn’t scare away any customers. Today’s price reduction results from “economies of scale;” the number of Proton Pass Plus customers has increased at a faster rate than Proton’s operating costs. Proton is paying less money to service each user, and it’s passing down the savings to encourage more sign-ups.

The Proton Pass team didn’t expect to hit this milestone in 2024. But it’s a very nice milestone, especially from a customer’s perspective. A Proton Pass Plus subscription used to be more expensive than a 1Password or LastPass membership, but it’s now the cheapest of the three options.

But is Proton Pass Plus the best password manager? If you’re a fan of Proton’s privacy-focused nature, the answer may be “yes.” This company is protected by Swiss privacy laws, all of its apps are open-source, and its services are protected by end-to-end encryption. Proton also stretches beyond password management. Its catalog includes an email platform, a calendar app, a VPN, and a cloud storage service.

Proton Pass Plus also has some unique features, such as the ability to generate email aliases. But the Proton Pass platform is still a very new thing. It can’t autofill mailing addresses, there aren’t native desktop apps yet (just a web app), and if you want to share Proton Pass Plus with your whole family, you have to buy the Proton Family Bundle, which includes several apps that you may not use. On the other hand, Proton Pass Plus is growing at an incredible rate, and upcoming features are listed in a product roadmap. Most people should be able to tolerate the “newness” of Proton Pass Plus.

Anyway, you can now get a year of Proton Pass Plus for $24. This is a permanent price cut, so I suggest that you test the free tier of Proton Pass before buying in. Those who are interested in the full suite of Proton’s services should check out Proton Unlimited, which costs $120 annually.
