Plex gives you one place to find and access all the media that matters to you. From personal media on your own server, to free and on-demand Movies & Shows, live TV, podcasts, and web shows, to streaming music, you can enjoy it all in one app, on any device.

And, it’s really simple to start using:

First, if you are streaming only third-party content (Movies & Shows, live TV, podcasts, web shows, TIDAL music), then you are good to go as soon as you have an account, just install an app on your phone, Smart TV, computer, or simply open up our web app on your browser!

If you are looking to set up your own personal media server to house your own stuff, there are a few more (simple!) steps to get up and running.

How do I get Plex to work?

First, install the Plex Media Server on a computer (or compatible NAS device) where your media/movies are stored. Add media libraries by type of content and let Plex do the rest. Cataloging, adding artwork and info is all automatic.

With the media server installed, you can then install the Plex app on virtually any device (phone, tablet, smart TV, streaming device, game console, PC, or any web browser) and stream and play all your media on those devices. Sit back and enjoy.

Is Plex free?

Streaming your own media using Plex is free on most devices. The Plex Media Server component is free, as well as the Plex player for Windows, macOS and streaming boxes. Media playback on iOS and Android devices requires an in-app purchase to remove limitations, and Plex also offers a subscription that adds more features like Live TV and DVR recording.

What file formats does Plex Support?

Plex Media Server supports all common media files. For videos and movies Plex can playback ASF, AVI, MP4, MPEGTS, MPEG, MKV, AVI, MOV, DIVX, and WMV. It also has support for 4K/UHD video. For music you got AAC, ALAC, E-AC3, MP3, M4A, FLAC, WAV and WMA. Finally for images JPG, PNG, RAW, TBN, among others.
