OnePlus has had a rocky history. It started off as a company that sold phones with flagship specs at rather low prices, but these days, OnePlus phones are similiar to the competition in both price and features. That’s not a bad thing, though, as its phones are still pretty good. Right on the heels of last year’s OnePlus 11, OnePlus has just unveiled the OnePlus 12 series, and it looks really good.
OnePlus has just announced a pair of smartphones belonging to the OnePlus 12 range. We have the OnePlus 12 and a lower-end sibling, the OnePlus 12R, succeeding last year’s OnePlus 11. The main difference between both is that the OnePlus 12 comes with the newest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, which powers the Samsung Galaxy S24 series and will power other flagship phones throughout 2024. The OnePlus 12R, on the other hand, comes with an older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which was the processor that was also used by the OnePlus 11 and other phones from last year.
The OnePlus 12 series was already announced in China back in December, so this is technically a smartphone from last year. Gven that information, we already knew a lot of what this phone would be packing. The design is pretty similar, and probably identical at first sight, to the design of the previous OnePlus 11. It packs 12GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, a 6.8-inch 120Hz adaptive display, and up to 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. As far as cameras go, we have a 50MP main camera and a 64MP periscopic telephoto lens. The OnePlus 12R brings the RAM down to 8GB, storage down to 256GB, and aside from that, it looks like it actually has some stuff going for it compared to the higher-end model. Its 5,500 mAh battery, for one, is apparently the biggest installed on a OnePlus phone.
The OnePlus 12 will set you back $799, while the OnePlus 12R will cost you $499. That pricing isn’t bad at all, especially considering the new Galaxy S24 series starts at $800. You can pre-order the phones from OnePlus starting today.
