One of the VR game reveals that appeared during today’s State of Play event is Metro: Awakening VR. This new title in the Metro world is developed by Vertigo Games, the creators of Arizona Sunshine and The 7th Guest VR. It’s also created in collaboration with Deep Silver and is inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s original novels. It launches on PlayStation VR2 sometime in 2024.
According to Vertigo, and as its title might imply, its set in 2028, before the events of Metro 2033. Instead of series stalwart Artyom, the player character is Serdar, who’s looking for his wife in the metro tunnels. It features the usual Metro staples, including deteriorating air filters, limited bullets and dim lighting via headlamp.
Samar Louwe, Vertigo’s associate game director, said the game uses PS VR2’s haptic feedback systems in the controllers and headset to simulate some of the game’s sensations. This includes reloading, pulling triggers and getting hit by bullets. Louwe added, “It’s nuances like these that push the level of immersion in VR even further on a visceral level.”
Louwe also added that Vertigo has been working on Awakening in collaboration with Deep Silver for two-and-a-half years. Deep Silver is the publisher behind the Metro: Last Light, Metro Exodus and Metro 2033 Redux. Supposedly a sequel to the last game in the series, Exodus, is in development at 4A Games, the developer of the non-VR Metro titles.
