Dell’s UltraSharp monitors are lauded for their color accuracy, video resolution, and accessible pricing. But the lack of a high refresh rate option has made the UltraSharp a bit of a no-go for some people. That changes today as Dell introduces the first UltraSharp monitors with a 120Hz refresh rate.
The new Dell UltraSharp 27 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U2724DE) and UltraSharp 27 Monitor (U2724D)are the first monitors to receive a five-star eye comfort rating from TUV Rheinland. They use ambient light sensors and other technology to automatically adjust brightness, fine-tune colors, and reduce “harmful” blue light emissions—cool stuff, but we’re more interested in the 1440p QHD resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 2000:1 contrast ratio, and impressive color coverage (89% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB).
As the name implies, Dell’s UltraSharp 27 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor doubles as a docking station. It connects to your computer via Thunderbolt cable to deliver 90-watt passthrough charging, 2.5 GbE networking, four USB-A accessory ports, and a Type-C accessory port. There’s also an HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C video port for additional video sources (computers, game consoles, etc) and a TB4 downstream port for daisy-chaining the UltraSharp 27 Thunderbolt Hub with an additional monitor.
The cheaper Dell UltraSharp 27 Monitor has a stripped-back port selection. It offers video connectivity over USB-C, HDMI, and DisplayPort. Connecting to your computer over USB-C unlocks the monitor’s three USB-A ports and a single USB-C accessory port. Dell’s UltraSharp 27 Monitor doesn’t offer passthrough charging.
Along with its new UltraSharp 27 monitors, Dell revealed the latest iterations of its UltraSharp 24 Monitors, which also gain the 120Hz refresh rate but stick with a 1080p resolution. There are also three new UltraSharp Video Conferencing monitors, which still use a 60Hz refresh rate.
Pricing for the 120Hz UltraSharp monitors is fairly reasonable. The standard UltraSharp 27 Monitor (U2724D) costs $480, while the UltraSharp 27 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U2724DE) is $650. Both monitors go on sale in the United States on November 9th. If you don’t care about the 120Hz refresh rate, buy an older iteration of the UltraSharp monitor, as it’ll cost less money and deliver most of the same features.
