Apple’s yearly round of OS updates has finished rolling out. In the mobile department, we got iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, and as far as Macs go, we also got macOS 14 Sonoma. The new operating system from Apple was finally released after a long round of testing, and it’s currently rolling out to Mac computers far and wide, old and new. Now, Apple has started to release the first major update to that operating system, albeit it looks like it’s only really major in version number.
Apple has now released macOS 14.1, after a brief beta testing period. It was probably fairly brief because, well, the update doesn’t really add a lot. It fixes a couple of issues, fairly annoying ones, and it does have a couple of minor feature changes, albeit they won’t radically change the way you use your PC. The full changelog goes as follows:
This update provides enhancements, bug fixes, and security updates for your Mac including:
- Favorites expanded in Music to include songs, albums, and playlists, and you can filter to display your favorites in the library
- Apple warranty status for Mac, AirPods, and Beats headphones and earbuds are available in System Settings
- Fixes an issue where the System Services settings within Location Services may reset
- Fixes an issue that may prevent encrypted external drives from mounting
Some features may not be available for all regions, or on all Apple devices.
To be fair, Apple usually keeps its big guns to the big OS updates it releases yearly, and this is the case for both iOS and macOS. So if macOS Sonoma already smells old for you, you might want to wait for Apple to release macOS 15 next year. Sonoma itself was a fairly tame update, with major additions including screensavers, a redesign to the login screen, a Game Mode for whatever few games you can get running on your Mac, and other stuff. This update, however, does fix a few issues and change around a few stuff, so it’s basically a more polished version of the initial Sonoma release. There’s no reason not to give it a spin, especially if you’re already on Sonoma.
