Berlin (dpa) – Speaking to the population at Easter, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed Germany’s support for Ukraine. “We all long for a more peaceful world,” said Scholz in a video message posted on Saturday. But peace without freedom meant oppression, he continued: there could be no peace without justice. “That is why we are supporting Ukraine in its fight for a just peace – for as long as necessary. We do this in our own interests, too – for our own safety.”

The Federal Chancellor accused Russia under President Vladimir Putin of breaking with a key principle that had applied for decades: that borders should not be moved by force. “But It is in our power to restore this principle. By continuing to support Ukraine – resolutely and prudently.” Scholz appealed for solidarity in society. “Especially in view of our shared belief that the law must prevail against violence.” That was the condition for peace, said Scholz.
