Berlin (d.de) – Germany is looking to increase the number of German police officers deployed on civilian EU missions. The Federal Government has decided to increase its involvement in the missions in Armenia, Georgia and Somalia. The EU’s aim in organising such unarmed missions is to help improve the security situation in the regions concerned. There have been armed conflicts in these countries that are still not resolved.
In Armenia, the EU mission seeks to contribute to the security of the population while at the same time supporting confidence-building between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In Georgia, the EU has been monitoring the security situation since a ceasefire agreement was signed in 2008. The mission in Somalia is dedicated to supporting the Somali government in building up its security forces in the face of the activities of criminal organisations and terrorist groups.
In its National Security Strategy, the Federal Government has also committed to increasing Germany’s involvement in EU missions. In particular, its civilian contribution to EU peacekeeping missions is to be boosted.
