Berlin (dpa) – Germany and France have said they are “deeply concerned” about the situation in Georgia. In a joint statement, the two countries said it was with deep regret that they took note of the decision of the Georgian government and ruling party to deviate from the European path. This is following the adoption of a controversial law to restrict foreign influence on civil society in Georgia. Since the end of last year, Georgia has had EU candidate country status.

“Both of our countries have been staunch supporters of Georgia’s European path.” Now, however, the Georgian government and ruling party were acting against our common European values and the aspirations of the Georgian people, the statement continued. Georgia’s President Salome Surabischwili had vetoed the law and described it as “Russian in its essence and spirit”.
