Berlin (dpa) – The Federal Armed Forces are to participate in the airlift for Gaza. Military transport planes are to drop relief supplies from the air for the people in the Gaza Strip. Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has issued an order to this effect to the Federal Armed Forces, as the Deutsche Presse Agentur Agency has learned. Other partners such as the US and France will also be involved in Jordan’s initiative.

According to military sources, the German section of the binational air transport squadron in Evreux, France, will take on the Federal Armed Forces mission. It is said the operation could begin as early as the end of the week.

Aid organisations say the situation of the people in the coastal strip is becoming increasingly desperate. According to the UN, a hunger crisis is imminent if more is not done to increase aid deliveries by lorry. Some 2.2 million people live in the Gaza Strip. The population in the region is now also receiving help via the sea.
