Munich (dpa/d.de) – For the next four weeks, Germany is all about football. The European Championship kicks off in Munich where host Germany takes on Scotland. Teams from 24 countries are competing at EURO 2024, with 51 matches to be played before the final in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on 14 July.
The German team under manager Julian Nagelsmann hopes to return to winning ways after depressingly early exits from the last World Cup and European Championship. Ilkay Gündogan will lead the team for his first European Championship as captain. Germany’s national team has won the World Cup four times, most recently in Brazil in 2014. Germany has also won three European Championships, in 1972, 1980 and 1996, thanks to Oliver Bierhoff’s golden goal against the Czech Republic in England.
Euro 2024 is the first major football tournament in Germany since the 2006 “summer fairy tale” World Cup and the Women’s World Cup in 2011. Football fans can watch EURO 2024 matches on big screens set up in fanzones in German cities. The largest “fan mile” is in Berlin, right in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
