A new statue of Sir Winston Churchill was unveiled in Calgary Thursday, as the world marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day. A look back at newspapers of the day reflect Churchill’s reputation as a unique politician and reflect his interest in Canada and Alberta. As his great grandson wrote in an opinion piece for the Calgary Herald this week, “Churchill loved Canada and especially southern Alberta.”   Here are some of the news stories about Churchill published in the Calgary Herald and The Albertan when he visited Canada, including Alberta, in 1929.
