The seizure of more than 27 kg of cocaine after the search of a west Edmonton home is the largest haul of the drug by the local branch of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT).

The cocaine, along with roughly 5 kg of MDMA, was seized, leading investigators to suggest the drugs value on the street is in the $3 million range, ALERT said in a Monday news release.

A search warrant executed at a west Edmonton home in the Lewis Estates neighbourhood April 30 before the drugs were seized.

ALERT also seized nearly four kilograms of a suspected cocaine buffing agent, $19,000 cash, and evidence of drug trafficking.

The April seizure was part of a larger ALERT-led investigation into organized crime activity in the Edmonton area, work that relied on help from the Edmonton Police Service and the RCMP.

One person has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing.

City’s biggest coke seizure in October

Edmonton’s all-time largest cocaine occurred in October of last year when city police seized 40.5 kg of cocaine during a traffic stop, notes ALERT. Charges in that case, however, were recently stayed.

Prior to that, in August 2013, city police seized 28 kg of cocaine in a drug operation.

Anyone who suspect drug or gang activity in their community can call local police, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers is always anonymous.

ALERT, established and is funded by the Alberta Government, is a compilation of the province’s top law enforcement resources.
