Edmonton police say two teens have been charged in connection with what authorities are calling “vicious,” unprovoked assaults at two LRT stations on April 1.
EPS says around 12:55 a.m., officers received a report that a 40-year-old man who was sitting alone at the Muttart LRT station was approached by two teens.
One of the teens allegedly pulled out a baton and hit the man in the head. The man then tried to flee, according to police, but the teens reportedly chased him and continued to assault him.
Officers responded to the scene and found the man near 84 Street and 101 Avenue. He was taken to a hospital by paramedics with serious, life-threatening injuries.
Around 2:15 a.m., police received a report that a 27-year-old woman was waiting at the bottom of a staircase at Churchill LRT Station when she was confronted by two teens.
Reports indicate the woman tried to walk up the stairs away from them, but was followed and reportedly kicked down the stairs.
Police say while they were investigating the scene, they were approached by a 32-year-old man who claimed he had also been assaulted by two teens.
The man told police the teens approached him, and one pulled out a baton and allegedly assaulted him.
EPS says just before 3 a.m., two 14-year-olds were located in the area of the Churchill LRT Station and were taken into custody.
One of the teens has been charged with aggravated assault, robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, and assault causing bodily harm.
The other teen has been charged with aggravated assault, robbery, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, and breach of conditions of a release order.
Police say they are not able to provide the names of the teens due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).
