Ravens 70, Huskies 67

In a see-saw battle, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies came up with the short end of the stick.

The Carleton University Ravens — thanks to a 9-0 run during the final quarter — won a second consecutive U Sports women’s national basketball championship with a 70-67 victory over Saskatchewan in Edmonton on Sunday night.

The Huskies held a 58-54 lead after three quarters, only to be outscored 16-9 in the final 10 minutes in what was a back-and-forth, physical battle between the top two teams in the nation.

“That was a wild ending, but I’m so happy for our team,” said Ravens head coach Dani Sinclair, whose team claimed the Bronze Baby trophy for the second straight year.

“I’m so proud of them.”

Guard Gage Grassick had the game of her life for Saskatchewan in the heart-breaking loss, scoring 30 points to go along with six rebounds, five assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Carly Ahlstrom, who was playing her final game as a Huskie, added 13 points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal.

Courtney Primeau had seven points and nine rebounds, while Andrea Dodig chipped in with six points, four assists and three steals for Saskatchewan, which trailed 19-14 after the opening quarter after jumping out to an early 7-2 lead.

Final 8 championship MVP Kali Pocrnic had 18 points for Carleton, which trailed 39-37 at half-time.

DOG TALES: Grassick and Ahlstrom were both named championship tournament all-stars .. Saskatchewan loses only two players to eligibility in Ahlstrom and Rose Fall, who did not see action in Sunday’s final game.
