The first crew on the scene located a fire in a basement suite in building B of an apartment complex. They started extinguishing it from the outside, said a news release issued late Sunday night.

One man was treated by ambulance staff and taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

Utilities could not be restored and the fire department shut the complex down. The release said the property owner is temporarily rehousing residents of the 26 occupied units in a hotel.

“It is unknown how many occupants are being displaced at this time but all tenants are being safely rehoused,” the release said.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Around an hour later, at 8:52 p.m., a garage fire was reported in the 100 block of Avenue L South.

“A fire to the exterior of a garage with overhead lines being involved was reported by the first arriving firefighters,” the fire department reported.

Crews started to attack the fire from outside the building and quickly brought it under control.

While the fire was contained to the outside of the garage, one firefighter sustained minor injuries, the release reported.

A fire investigator concluded the fire is suspicious and started along the fence between two properties. Minor damage extended to two garages and a shed. Damage is estimated at $10,000.

City police will continue the investigation.
