AESO added that “Alberta’s electricity grid continues to be strained” and asked customers to conserve power.

At 9:11 a.m., EPCOR posted to social media that AESO had directed it to help manage power consumption and that rolling outages were in effect.

Twenty-three minutes later, EPCOR again posted that rotating outages had stopped and that AESO had ended its directive for EPCOR to reduce power consumption across the city, though the grid alert remained.

As of 9:39 a.m., there were no outages reported in the city, according to EPCOR’s online map.

The same map showed communities near the northern and boundaries of the city as well as southeast Edmonton had been affected.

EPCOR stated on social media that the normal duration for outages is around 30 minutes.

The outages came amid temperatures just below freezing and an early-morning snowstorm.

A similar situation unfolded in Calgary where customers in 11 neighbourhoods were left without power for a brief period.

As of 9:15 Friday, the Alberta Interconnect Electric System log showed a number of gas plants had gone offline.
