LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Tiger Woods won’t see the weekend at the PGA Championship after a disastrous start to his second round on Friday that saw two triple bogeys in his first three holes.

Woods was seven-over-par after just four holes of the second round and will head to next month’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst with a missed cut at this week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla, and a last-place finish among players to make the cut at the Masters in April.

“You can’t win a tournament unless you make the cut,” Woods said after his first round. “That’s the whole idea is get to the weekend so that you can participate and have a chance to win.”

That is the idea, but that’s not what the 48-year-old 15-time major winner accomplished in Louisville, Ky.

Woods shot a one-over 72 on Thursday despite getting through 16 holes at one-under. Two closing three-putts ruined his first round, and a day later it was the beginning of his second round that sunk him. Woods managed to make some ground up with back-to-back birdies at holes seven and eight, before giving them right back with bogeys at 11 and 12.

“It’s just that I just don’t play a whole lot of competitive rounds. I haven’t played since the Masters. So it’s a little bit different than being at home and playing a flat Florida course,” he said Thursday. “The rough is dense. It’s just very dense. With the rain we got and just the moisture on it, I know they’ve topped it off, but it’s just really lush.”

The PGA Championship was just Woods’ seventh official event since the beginning of 2022, with his best finish being a tie for 45th at last year’s Genesis Invitational.
