Boreal Forest: Friend to the animals and wanderer through the trees Dwayne Martineau uses his considerable imagination here to present this solo sculptural photo project in the Main Hall at Art Gallery of Alberta using uncanny reflections. “My goal is to turn landscapes into portraits and feature nature on its own terms, with personality and intention. I’m trying to knock humans off the pedestal,” says Martineau of his mesmerizing work. “I want to create work that will blow the mind of some awkward kid, like I was, and pay forward some of the formative early encounters with art and science that led me on my weird path.” Come be one of the first to enjoy it!

Waiting for the Sun: Amy van Keeken’s first public performance since the terrestrial departure of her renaissance-man husband Darren Radbourne, the beloved CKUA DJ is joined on stage by Wilf (Thunder in the Tundra) Kozub and art wizard Smokey for a singer-storyteller session in the round. Christine Hanson joins on cello, with Blue Chair regular Jamie Philp playing guitar. It’s down to a limited number of tickets at the door, so do show up early — this one’s going to be a beaut.

Oscar Nominated Shorts: Edmonton International Film Festival presents the 2024 Oscar Nominated Shorts series this week, starting with Documentary noon Sunday, featuring Island In Between, Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó, The ABC’s of Book Banning, The Last Repair Shop and The Barber of Little Rock. Through the week it’s the Animation program 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, then the Live Action package 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Shorts programs can be pretty touch and go, but in this case given their Oscar pedigree you’re likely to see the best of the best here.
