The Windsor Spitfires were unable to complete a late-game comeback.

Windsor erased a two-goal deficit to pull even with the London Knights in the third period on Friday.

But the Knights, who boast the best record in the Ontario Hockey League, would get the game-winning goal on a power play and edge the Spitfires 4-3 before a crowd of 9,036 at Budweiser Gardens.

Rookie defenceman Carson Woodall had the Spitfires up 1-0 after the first period, but Sam O’Reilly, Denver Barkey and Alec Leonard scored in a span of two minutes and 12 seconds to give London a 3-1 lead in the second period.

Ryan Abraham pulled Windsor to within 3-2 after 40 minutes and Ryan Struthers redirected a point shot from Tanner Winegard in to tie the game early in the third period.

But London would get the eventual game-winning goal on the power play and the Spitfires were unable to produce another equalizer.

Windsor closes out the season on the road Saturday against the West Division-leading Saginaw Spirit, who will host this year’s Memorial Cup.

Express drop Lightning

Guard Shadell Millinghaus torched his former team for 38 points on Friday.

Millinghaus led the way as the Windsor Express built a 24-point lead at the half and beat the London Lightning 117-107 in Basketball Super League play at the WFCU Centre.

Calvin Blaydes added 25 points for the Express (11-8) while newcomer Mike Parks Jr. debuted with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Ty Groce finished with 16 points and Latin Davis added 13 points, nine rebounds and nine assists against the Lighting (15-9).

The fourth-place Express hit the road for a key Sunday match in Sudbury against the fifth-place Five (11-9).

Flyers take opener

The Leamington Flyers have stolen home-ice advantage from the Milton Menace.

Brayden Degelas forced a turnover and stepped in front of the net to snap home the winner at 3:08 of the second overtime period and rally the third-seeded Flyers to a 4-3 win over the second-seeded Menace.

The Flyers lead the Western Conference best-of-seven series 1-0 in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. Game 2 of the series is Sunday in Leamington at 5:10 p.m.

The Flyers fell behind 2-0 early, but rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the third period on goals by Cayden Faust, Landon Bernard and Cameron Arquette.

The Menace would get a power-play goal just 43 seconds after Leamington went ahead to force extra time.
