Ramping up to the institution’s 100th birthday in 150 days is the latest Refinery bash, Palm Room: A 1920s Speakeasy this Saturday

In leap year 1924, the Art Gallery of Alberta — then the Edmonton Museum of Arts — had first-ever exhibition in Hotel Macdonald’s beautiful Palm Room, 24 works borrowed from the National Gallery of Canada.

Ramping up to the institution’s 100th birthday in 150 days is the latest Refinery bash, Palm Room: A 1920s Speakeasy this Saturday.

Edmonton’s vaudeville vixen Vivian Vanguard — co-producer of The Canary Room and co-founder of Fever Dream Revue — will be performing burlesque numbers, while magnetic street performer and multidisciplinary artist Jay Flair will be mesmerizing the crowd.

Of course, dressing up with glitz and glamour is part of the fun here, party patrons encouraged to lean into the look of a century back — whether that’s the glitz of the speakeasy, or the casual leisure of an afternoon at the theatre.

Please note that for the exhibition Tom Thompson: North Star specifically, there’s a mandatory bag check, but you otherwise run free throughout the rest of the current lineup of shows, including Braxton Garneau’s Pay Dirt, 5 Artists 1 Love, Brenda Draney’s Drink from the River, Emmanual Osahor’s I Made This Place for You and Dwayne Martineau’s Boreal Fortress in the main hall.

Tickets are $60 a pop, or $50 for both AGA members or self-identified arts and culture workers — and you can find all those plus more info at youraga.ca.
