Ottawa Fire Services said crews received a call from a Britannia Yacht Club staff member reporting that a swimmer was stuck under the water at Deschênes Rapids in the Ottawa River. The rescue crews found the man under the water, away from a capsized boat involved in another rescue last week. The person in the water was caught in the rope that had been used to tie the boat to the shore.

Swimming at Britannia Beach is currently unsupervised. City of Ottawa lifeguards will be on summer duty from June 15 to Aug. 25 at Britannia Beach, Mooney’s Bay Beach, Petrie East Bay and Petrie River.

Last July, the body of a 21-year-old was discovered in the water at Britannia after they went missing the night before, after lifeguards had completed their shift.

A few days earlier, a 17-year-old also nearly drowned before being rescued.
