A woman who allegedly hit and gouged at the eyes of a Vancouver police officer during a pro-Palestinian protest last month has been identified.

VPD spokesperson Const. Tania Visintin confirmed Tuesday that the suspect was arrested and released while investigators continue to look into the attack.

The alleged assault happened during a March 2 demonstration as officers tried to block the on-ramp to a bridge the group was trying to occupy.

The suspect is alleged to have injured a VPD constable during a March 2 demonstration by hitting her in the face and using a small flagstick to poke at her eyes.

A month ago, police released photographs of the suspect and asked the public to help identify her. Though she was wearing a black medical mask, Visintin said police recognized the woman from earlier protests. They did not, however, know her identity.

“While most people continue to act lawfully and respectfully, we’ve noted an increased level of aggression and hostility from some participants at recent gatherings,” said Visintin in mid-March.

“Their actions have endangered our officers and the public.”

Anyone who saw the assault and has not talked to investigators is asked to call the VPD major crime section at 604-717-2541.
