The Sûreté du Québec and more than two dozen municipal police forces will on Tuesday conduct a province-wide crackdown on road safety in an effort to improve Quebec’s highway death statistics.

In a statement, the provincial force said police “will intervene (on cases) of problematic (driver) behaviour in order to make drivers aware of their responsibility in improving the road safety record and to increase the feeling of security on all of the road network.”

The SQ says it is concerned by the “overrepresentation” of certain types of vulnerable road users in collisions recorded over the past few weeks.

“The deaths of six motorcyclists since the start of the current season require concrete and immediate action,” it said.

Another aspect of road safety the SQ will focus upon is the mandatory use of seatbelts, noting that in 2023, 20 per cent of people who died on Quebec highways were not wearing their seatbelts.

The SQ will be joined by 28 municipal police forces in Tuesday’s operation, which will also include the Fédération des motocyclistes du Québec and Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec.
