At the girls provincial curling championship this weekend, Holy Cross walked away with a bronze medal after defeating Yorkton Sacred Hearth 12-2 in the third-place game. The team went 2-1 in the round robin, before falling 7-5 to Moose Jaw Peacock in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, at the mixed championship, Bethlehem finished fourth after losing to Yorkton Regional 5-3 in the bronze-medal game. Bethlehem also went 2-1 in the round robin, but was defeated in the semifinals 9-6 by Moose Jaw Central.

Over at the wrestling mats, Saskatoon wrestlers captured 18 gold medals at provincials.

On the female side, that includes: Avery Clatney, Marion Graham (44-kilogram division); Jill Roxas, Walter Murray (47kg); Liz Champman, Holy Cross (50kg); Meagan Summers, Walter Murray (56kg); Olipa Mwango, Holy Cross (73kg); Natalie Heggstrom, Tommy Douglas (80kg); and Anji Shadiya, Holy Cross (90kg).

Gold medals on the male side were won by: Pascal Lavertu, Marion Graham (41kg); Matias Munoz, Marion Graham (44kg); Wynn Griffith, Walter Murray (47kg); Maxson Nguyen, Bishop James Mahoney (50kg); Jake Vides, Walter Murray (56kg); Zecheriah Topping, Walter Murray (59kg); Ben Kawa, Holy Cross (62kg); Max Kershaw, Centennial (69kg); Sam Nickel, Holy Cross (77kg); Matthew Young, Evan Hard (90kg); and Oti Kabongo, Holy Cross (100kg).


Avery Pearson captures three medals at U Sports national track and field championships

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies track and field team was in Winnipeg March 7-9 for the U Sports national track and field championships, earning six medals in total.

Avery Pearson led the way for the Huskies, capturing a gold in the women’s 1,000-metre race with a time of 2:47.10 as well as a silver in the 600m with a time of 1:29.39.

Pearson also teamed up with Kaitlyn Harrison, Attleigh Maloney and Jenica Swartz to claim gold in the women’s 4x800m relay, finishing with a time of 8:45.60.

In other Saskatchewan women’s medal results, Paige Williams raced to a time of 38.10 to earn silver in the 300m, while Olamide Olaloku finished third in triple jump with a distance of 12.23 m.

Saskatchewan’s lone men’s medal was won by Masson Altrogge, who finished second in the heptathlon with 5107 points.

Overall, the women’s team finished the championship in fourth place with 86 points, while the men’s team tied for 12th with 22 points.


Blazers onto SMAAAHL semis

The Saskatoon Blazers have advanced to the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League semifinals after defeating the Estevan Great North Bears 3-1 in their best-of-five quarterfinals series.

Saskatoon sealed their series victory with a 5-4 win in Thursday’s Game 4. This was after the Blazers won the first two games of the series and falling 3-2 in overtime in Game 3.

The Regina Pat Canadians have also advanced after defeating the Moose Jaw Warriors 3-1 in their series, which included an 11-2 trouncing in Game 4.

Both of the other two series — between the Tisdale Trojans and the Warman Wildcats, as well as between the Prince Albert Mintos and the Swift Current Legionnaires — will be decided on Sunday as each series is tied 2-2. Results for those games were not available at the time of publication.


Stars earn playoff shutout victory

It’s a 1-0 series lead for the Saskatoon Stars as they defeated the Weyburn Gold Wings 6-0 on Friday in the first game of their best-of-three quarterfinals series.

Avery Bairos had the hat trick for the Stars, while Halle Duchene, Ireland Stein and Peyton Gabruck each added one. Mikayala Christmann recorded the shut out, stopping all 14 shots faced.

Meanwhile, the Notre Dame Hounds led the Prince Albert Northern Bears 1-0 after earning a 3-2 overtime victory in Game 1, as do the Battlefords Sharks, who defeated the Swift Current Legionnaires 2-1.

Game 2 of each of the respective series will be played on Sunday, however, results were not available by the time of publication.

The Regina Rebels, who finished the regular season in first place, earned a bye to the semifinals.


Westleys leading city rival Royals in PJHL playoffs

In the Prairie Junior Hockey League north semifinals, the Saskatoon Westleys are up 3-1 in their best-of-seven series against the Saskatoon Royals.

The two teams captured a victory each in the first two games, but the Westleys won Games 3 and 4 with scores of 5-4 and 6-1, respectively. The two teams played Game 5 on Sunday, however, results were not available at the time of publication.

The other north semifinal has the Saskatoon Quakers up 3-2 over the Delisle Chiefs after winning 5-2 in Saturday’s Game 5.

In south action, the Pilot Butte Storm swept the Regina Silver Foxes 4-0 and Fort Knox leads the Regina Capitals 3-2.
