The historic John R. Park home in Essex remains closed until fall as preservation work continues.

Sister joists have been installed to repair a roof sag caused by historic powder post beetle damage, raising the roof by nearly 12 inches (30.5 centimetres) in some areas, according to Essex Region Conservation Authority officials.

“The most urgent priority was to ensure the structural stability of the roof,” said curator Kris Ives, of the restorations that began last fall.

Work continued through the winter months to restore the plaster and lathe in the east and west attic annexes and to repair windows in the basement.

Exterior siding repairs and repainting have begun now that warmer weather has arrived and the finishing coats of plaster and lime wash are being applied in the interior of the home.

Next steps include excavation and waterproofing on the south side of the house and replacement of the iconic lakeside porch.

Work began after an architectural review identified more than $1.4 million in structural repair work, foundation works, roof repairs, window and door replacements, waterproofing and more needed to be done to ensure the sustainability of the nearly 200-year-old original buildings of John and Amelia Park.

Funding for the project includes $500,000 from reserve funds, nearly $100,000 in donations and another $100,000 donation from the Toldo Foundation.

“This once-in-a-lifetime restoration began following a comprehensive heritage architect’s investigation and detailed report identifying works that needed to be undertaken to ensure the historic home’s long-term sustainability,” said Kevin Money, ERCA director of conservation services.

Money said an additional $500,000 is needed to complete the restoration work.

“The additional funds will be used to address foundation issues on the home’s north side, and to restore the structural integrity of the horse barn and other buildings, to complete the restoration to the highest standards.”
