B.C.’s independent investigators into police incidents resulting in injury or death say charges should be considered against an officer involved in a crash last summer that left a motorcyclist with serious injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) filed a report this week into the collision between a Port Moody police SUV and the motorbike on July 25, 2023.

The evidence shows a member of the Port Moody Police Department tried to make a traffic stop of a black motorcycle. When the biker didn’t stop, the officer didn’t give chase but reported a description to other Port Moody officers.

“A short time later, a different Port Moody officer driving a police SUV observed a motorcycle driving towards them near the intersection of Valour and Glenayre drives,” said an IIO statement released Monday.

“There was a collision between the motorcycle and the police SUV, and the rider of the motorcycle sustained a serious injury.”

The IIO’s interim chief civilian director, Sandra J. Hentzen, looked at the evidence and “determined that reasonable grounds exist to believe that one officer may have committed offences in relation to the use of their police vehicle.”

A report has been forwarded to the B.C. Prosecution Service for consideration of charges. Prosecutors must believe there’s a substantial likelihood of conviction based on the IIO evidence and that a prosecution would be in the public interest.
