The parents of an infant girl are facing aggravated assault charges after the newborn sustained a potentially life-altering injury to her arm last November, Lethbridge police said Saturday.

Child and Family Services alerted police on Nov. 27 after learning a three-week-old baby had been admitted to Chinook Regional Hospital. An investigation determined the baby’s arm had been broken as a result of significant force.

The two, who cannot be named to protect the girl’s identity, were each charged Friday with aggravated assault, failing to provide necessaries of life and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

.The mother was remanded in custody on Saturday and is due in court Tuesday, while the father was released. He is to appear in court March 8.
