Federal Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez announced Monday morning an “investment of up to $16.75 million” for the addition of a fourth track on the railway bridge over Pie-IX Blvd. at the entrance to the Port of Montreal.

Rodriguez, who made the announcement during a summit organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Montreal, said “this investment in the Port of Montreal will strengthen the supply chains.”

The project also involves the construction of a storage area and the rehabilitation of the bridge.

The investment will support Lantic Sugar in its expansion and help “bring their sugar more easily to Ontario,” explained the minister.

Lantic Sugar, which has a factory in the port area on Notre-Dame St. E., recently announced an investment of $200 million to increase its production capacity by 20 per cent.

In a statement, the president and CEO of Lantic Inc., Mike Walton, indicated that “the fourth track will allow additional fluidity.”

The investment announced by Ottawa comes from the National Trade Corridors Fund.
