Some amateur detective work by a victimized Ottawa car owner has helped Gatineau police break up a vehicle theft operation.
Police said in a release Thursday that a 35-year-old man faces a number of charges after detectives uncovered a stolen vehicle operation at a garage on Rue Saint-Louis.

Police said they conducted a raid last summer on Rue Saint-Louis after a Ottawa car owner tracked his stolen vehicle to the address, according to police.

“Officers … quickly located the (stolen) vehicle in question,” police said.
Officers also saw a number of vehicles that were known to be popular with “theft networks,” including two recent Honda CRVs and a Honda Pilot.
Follow-up searches on license plates and vehicle serial numbers led police to confirm several vehicles at the garage had been reported stolen in Ontario and Quebec.
Eleven stolen vehicles were recovered during the investigation, according to police.
Several charges were laid against the suspect on March 12, including 12 counts of possession of property obtained by crime, as well as charges of conspiracy and/or theft.
Police say further arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
