An Ontario Provincial Police shot to put down what the force described as a “dangerous and aggressive” dog in Embrun on Thursday morning.
A media release said officers from the OPP’s Russell County detachment were called to Notre Dame Street, in the Lapointe Boulevard area, around 11:30 a.m. after a man was reported to be walking around armed with a large knife and behaving threateningly.

Officers arrested the man without incident, police said, but his dog attacked people in the area, including an OPP officer, plus other dogs and animals.
The release said the officers made other unsuccessful attempts to subdue the dog, including using a Conducted Energy Weapon, commonly known by the Taser brand name. “Out of concern for public and officer safety, an officer made the decision to utilize their firearm to put the dog down.”
No serious injuries were reported by individuals in the area, the OPP added.
The incident remained under investigation later on Thursday.
Embrun is about 40 kilometres east of Ottawa.
