The public was key in helping officers recover cash and tropical fish taken from a restaurant in Beachburg, Ont., a press release from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reads.

Officers say a “boatload of support” from the public and help from the Community Street Crime Unit were important to “reel in” and arrest the accused.

On April 11, “several thousand dollars” of fish was stolen from the aquarium, the owner of the restaurant said.

On Friday, the Upper Valley Detachment of the OPP said Justin McClelland, 23, of Beachburg, was charged with break and enter, theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

The accused was “caught” and “released” to the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on June 3.

“The wave of support from the public was ‘fintastic,’” the press release reads. “The OPP would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that they can make a difference and still remain anonymous.”
