Plans to consolidate the Town of Antigonish with the County of Antigonish is being held off for now.

Nova Scotia’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing says many residents have spoken out against the move and the province is responding by shelving the legislation.

John Lohr released a statement yesterday after Premier Tim Houston’s tense public meeting on Tuesday with about 500 people at the Heatherton Community Centre in Antigonish County.

When Houston tried to defend the decision to consolidate, his comments were met with loud booing and yelling.

In the statement, Lohr says, “while both town and county municipal officials did vote in favour of consolidation, we simply cannot ignore the voices of the residents.”
