The adult suspect in the slaying of a Calgary teen won’t know until at least the end of July whether he’ll be ordered to stand trial.

Crown prosecutors Vicki Faulkner and Jo-Ann Munn Gafuik finished calling evidence in the accused’s preliminary inquiry on Wednesday.

But because the prosecutors and defence lawyer Andrea Urquhart will be providing written submissions to Justice Karen Molle, a decision in the case won’t be made until at least July 29, when oral arguments will be presented to the judge.

The accused, and his younger brother, are charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Danillo Canales Glenn.

Glenn, 18, was fatally stabbed last Sept. 5, at a basketball court on Copperstone Rd. S.E. Police said Glenn was there with two friends when two individuals approached him and, following a brief altercation, he was killed.

Both Urquhart’s client and his 16-year-old brother were later charged with second-degree murder.

Under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the younger accused can’t be identified. Naming his older brother would breach that provision.

In December, defence counsel Alain Hepner, who represents the younger brother, scheduled a two-week Calgary Court of King’s Bench trial for his client to be heard next month, before a judge sitting without a jury.

While the adult brother must be tried in the higher court, if Molle finds there is evidence for a committal, Hepner had the option of choosing to have his client tried by a youth court judge, or a King’s Bench judge sitting with, or without a jury.

At an earlier court appearance for the youth, Faulkner filed notice the Crown would be seeking an adult sentence if the younger brother is convicted.

Both brothers remain detained in custody pending a resolution to their cases.
