The prosecution has been given some time to look for a missing witness before concluding a preliminary inquiry into a Calgary homicide.
Justice Peter Barley on Thursday agreed to adjourn the hearing to determine if two men will stand trial for second-degree murder after a witness warrant failed to turn up Shane Goertz.

Barley issued the warrant on Monday at the request of prosecutors Britta Kristensen and Stephanie Morton when the preliminary inquiry of murder suspects Darren Bulldog and Jason Tait commenced.

The two men were set to face a hearing on manslaughter allegations into the spring 2022 death of 22-year-old Keenan Crane, but the prosecution upgraded their charges to second-degree murder prior to the commencement of the preliminary inquiry.
The body of Crane was discovered near Morley on May 15, 2022, after his family reported him missing at the end of April.
Calgary police indicated they believe Crane was killed on April 7, and his body was moved outside the city.
Bulldog, 40, of Calgary, was arrested Feb. 10, 2023, and Tait, of Edmonton, was charged 12 days later after a warrant for his arrest was issued a day earlier.
In December 2022, Crane’s family put out a plea for information that might lead to the arrest of those responsible for his death. Braden Crane said his younger brother loved everyone who was close to him.
“I have this one fond memory of him. He had this little dog, a chihuahua, it was his dog and they were out camping and they had no food, all they had left was salted peanuts. He would lick the salt off the peanuts just so he could feed it to his dog,” said Crane.
“That just showed me he had loved so much. He loved everybody, anybody, in his life that was close to him.”
Both Tait and Bulldog remain in custody pending an outcome to the case.
