An underwater recovery mission for a stolen vehicle submerged under the Fraser River in Coquitlam has led to the discovery of three more vehicles underwater, including a school bus.

Coquitlam RCMP said a stolen vehicle was spotted going into the Fraser River at Maquabeak Park in Coquitlam just after midnight on April 6. Officers arrived to find the car fully submerged near the boat launch with the head lights and tail lights on.

At daylight, RCMP divers found the vehicle. Because of poor conditions and the vehicle’s position, an initial visual search was only able to determine no one was in the driver’s seat, said police.

The divers also found three other vehicles in the water, including a school bus, said Coquitlam RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Alexa Hodgins.

“The other vehicles appear to have been at this location for some time,” she said.

One vehicle, a black Honda Civic that had been reported stolen, has been recovered from the water.

Coquitlam, B.C.: RCMP divers have found three other vehicles in the Fraser River in Coquitlam while searching for a stolen vehicle that went into the water on April 6, 2024.

The environment ministry will now take over the recovery of the other vehicles due to potential environmental concerns and divers from the Canadian Coast Guard will be tasked with searching the vehicle that went into the water on April 6 and assessing the other vehicles.

Police said it’ll also be working with the Insurance Corp. of B.C., the City of Coquitlam and other partners on the investigation, but “should any of the vehicles be linked to a criminal investigation, Coquitlam RCMP will assume conduct of that investigation.”
