Toronto’s food scene has always been something the city has been proud of, boasting thousands of restaurants across 158 neighbourhoods.

Restaurant technology platform Snappy used Google’s Looker Studio to compile data on the 9,378 restaurants to determine what’s hot in the city.

With population of 2.79 million, as of 2021, according to Census, that’s 3.4 restaurants per 1,000 residents.

The most popular restaurant categories include burger joints, Indian, Mexican, Greek and Chinese cuisines, coffee shops, pizza places, bubble tea spots and fast food.

There are currently 15 Michelin star restaurants, with Sushi Masaki Saito, located at 89 Avenue Rd., being the only two-Michelin star restaurant in Canada.

While restaurant popularity was not determined, the report did find that Chinese cuisine has the highest number of restaurants with 308.

Indian followed with 278 eateries, and Italian has 231 to take third.

Japanese cuisine took fourth place with 144 spots, Mexican was right behind with 139, there are 137 Korean restaurants, and Thai was lucky number 7 with 106 restaurants.

Now, whether you dine in or are grabbing your meal to go, there are 338 fast-food restaurants in the city to choose from – McDonald’s, Wendy’s and KFC being the most popular.

In fact, there are 70 McDonald’s locations in Toronto alone.

Pizza was preferred with 667 joints across the city, and there are 520 bars (and bar-related venues) throughout the city.

However, it’s clear that Torontonians love their cafes and coffee shops, if the 749 means anything.

Tim Hortons more than doubles the amount of Starbucks locations, with 328 compared to 140.

But it appears bubble tea is making a surge, thanks to the 344 establishments in the city. That’s almost one bubble tea shop for every day of the year.

Of the 9,000-plus restaurants, 446 boasted a perfect 5 out of 5 rating on Google, while 2,766 have a score of 4.5 or more.

The average customer rating on Google was 3.9, but 934 restaurants have a customer rating of less than 3 out of 5.
