Winning one of six games isn’t a great day at the office for Blue Jays affiliates.

On Thursday evening, all six Blue Jay affiliates were in action for the second time this season, with only one team winning. Sadly, two teams were walked off in extra-innings.

Let’s dig into the latest Minor League Report!

Buffalo blew an extra-innings lead

On Thursday, the Buffalo Bisons fell 7-6 in 10 innings to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs to move their record to 30-30. They took a two-run lead in the top of the tenth, but allowed three in the following half inning.

Orelvis Martinez hit his organization-leading 14th home run of the season, while catcher Brian Serven hit his second of the season. Spencer Horwitz hit his International League-leading 22nd double, while Michael Turconi hit his first double in Triple-A.

Horwitz and Turconi both had multi-hit performances, as did Steward Berroa, Nathan Lukes, and Riley Tirotta, while Addison Barger and Cam Eden each had a single.

Beau Sulser started the game and pitched four perfect innings, striking out three batters. Paxton Schultz struck out three but allowed two solo home runs. Mike Mayers also pitched a clean inning, striking out two. 

Hagen Danner was tagged with a blown save, giving up two earned runs while striking out a batter in an inning pitched, while Nick Fraze was tagged with the loss, giving up two earned runs in his inning of work. 

New Hampshire won the organization’s only game

The only Blue Jays affiliate to win on Thursday was the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, who defeated the Erie SeaWolves 4-3. This brings their season record to 25-29.

All three home runs from the Fisher Cats came from players drafted in the 2022 draft, or signed shortly after. Devonte Brown was an undrafted free agent, and the question still remains how he went undrafted, as he hit his fifth homer of the season. It was a two-run shot to give the Fisher Cats the lead in the ninth, and his 131 wRC+ is tied for the lead for the Fisher Cats with the player we’ll look at next.

Alan Roden hit six home runs in 209 plate appearances with the Fisher Cats season, on top of four homers with the Vancouver Canadians. So far in 218 plate appearances, Roden has seven homers along with a 131 wRC+.

Josh Kasevich, the team’s second-round pick in the 2022 draft, hit his second home run of the season and his sixth professional home run of his career. He has a 112 wRC+, which is tracking to be his best season in the organization.

Zach Britton had a double, while Roden and Phil Clarke had multi-hit performances. Other players with a hit were Rainer Nuñez and Ryan McCarty, who has brought his party to the Fisher Cats and has a three-game hit streak.

Devereaux Harrison made the start for the Fisher Cats and recorded a quality start, finishing with a line of 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K with a home run given up to bring his season ERA to 5.01. Justin Kelly pitched in his third game as a Fisher Cat, and gave up an earned run in the inning of work.

Ryan Boyer picked up the win, striking out a batter in his inning of work to bring his season ERA to 2.65. He’s something worth monitoring. Eric Pardinho’s streak of not allowing an earned run in a game continued as he picked up a save, walking and striking out a batter. His streak is now 14 games long.

 

Vancouver still can’t climb above .500

Every time the Vancouver Canadians reach .500, they proceed to lose the next game, as was the case on Thursday. They fell 5-1 to the Everett AquaSox to move their record to 24-25, which is 3.5 games behind the leader of the Northwest League.

The bats were quiet on Thursday, aside from Jamari Baylor, who hit his first home run in the Blue Jays organization and had a multi-hit game. Selected in the third round of the 2019 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, Baylor is slashing .240/.367/.360 in 30 plate appearances for the Vancouver Canadians.

Other players with a hit were Dylan Rock, Dasan Brown, and Jackson Hornung, who also walked twice to reach base in three of four plate appearances.

Canadian Connor O’Halloran made the start for the Canadians, and he finished with a line of 5 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 7 K to bring his season ERA to 3.60 with Vancouver. Rafael Ohashi struck out a batter, but allowed a hit and a walk in his inning of work to bring his season ERA to 3.05. Anders Tolhurst continues to dominate High-A, he now has a 1.74 ERA after a strikeout in his inning of work. Conor Larkin pitched a clean inning to bring his season ERA to 2.

Dunedin lost in a back-and-forth extra innings battle

Like the Vancouver Canadians, the Dunedin Blue Jays have had issues getting above .500, as they lost 8-7 in the 12th inning to the Palm Beach Cardinals to bring their record to 26-28.

There were no home runs hit in this game by Dunedin, but four of their 14 hits were doubles! Jean Joseph had two doubles, Manuel Beltre hit his ninth double, and Edward Duran hit his 10th double of the season. All three players had multi-hit games, with Beltre and Joseph having three-hit performances, as did Marcos De La Rosa. Daniel Pérez had two hits, while Yeuni Munoz had the D-Jays’ other hit.

Starting the game for the D-Jays was 2023 draftee Grant Rogers, who finished with a line of 5  IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K to bring his season ERA to 4.93. Eliander Alcalde was the first out of the bullpen, striking out three batters in two innings of work. Aaron Munson also struck out three in his inning of work.

Kai Peterson continues to be one of the more intriguing left-handed relievers in the system, as he struck out five batters in two innings of work while allowing an unearned run. He has a 6.17 ERA for the season, but a fantastic 41.8 K%. Keiner Leon was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs (one earned) in an inning and two thirds pitched while striking out three.

FCL Jays lost 4-3

The Florida Complex League Jays seemingly can’t get a win streak going, as they fell 4-3 to the FCL Yankees to bring their record to 6-18.

Canadian Sam Shaw hit his second double of the season, as did Adrian Meza, while Enmanuel Bonilla reached base with a single. Those were the three hits for the FCL Jays. Robert Robertis, Maykel Minoso, Railin Tejada and Aneudi Escanio each had one walk.

Franly Urena made the start for the F-Jays, finishing with a line of 3.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K with a home run given up. Luis Torres was tagged with the loss, giving up an earned run in an inning and a third pitched. Lluveres Severino pitched an inning and struck out two to bring his season ERA to 3.55.

DSL Jays blew a three-run lead

Heading into the top of the seventh, the final inning of the game, the Dominican Summer League Blue Jays had a 6-3 lead over the DSL Giants Black. However, the DSL Giants Black scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to win 10-7, bringing the DSL Jays’ record to 0-2.

Yorman Licourt hit the game’s only extra-base hit, his first hit in affiliated ball. Angel Guzman had two hits, the only multi-hit game for the DSL Jays, while Juarlin Soto, Randy Soto, Dariel Ramon, and Esmeiquel Arrieche each had a single. Pascual Archila had two walks as well.

For the second straight game, pitching wasn’t great for the DSL Jays. Pedro Tucent started the game and finished with a line of 3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 2 K. First out of the bullpen was Geremy Barroso, who had the only scoreless outing, walking a batter in his inning of work. Josue Loreto gave up an earned run and walked two in two innings pitched, but picked up his first hold of the season.

Edgar Gallegos was tagged with the loss and blown save, giving up six earned runs and three walks in two thirds of an inning pitched. Andersson Barvosa also allowed an earned run while walking a batter in his third of an inning pitched.
