This edition of the Minor League Report will have it all!

Not only did two affiliates both play on Monday, as both rookie teams were in action, but the Blue Jays also made several roster moves. We’ll also set up the week ahead for the four “A” affiliate teams.

Let’s dig into a busy Minor League Report!

FCL Jays shut out the FCL Phillies

The Blue Jays completed their suspended game from Saturday against the FCL Phillies, defeating them 8-0 to move their season record to 7-23.

There were no home runs hit in this game, but the standout for the F-Jays was the rehabbing Cade Doughty, who hit a double and had a three-hit performance. The rehabbing Braden Barry had two hits, as did Sam Shaw and Faruk De La Cruz. The other extra-base hit was by Kendry Chirinos, who hit his third triple of the season.

Moreover, Railin Tejada, Jonathan Peguero, and Aneudi Escanio all had a single. Joey Votto finally made his return to game action, driving in a run and hitting three fly outs, all three to Phillies outfielder Jorge García.

The Jays’ pitchers had a great game, with rehabbing top 30 prospect Dahian Santos started, striking out four in two innings. Samuel Colmenares pitched a clean inning and two thirds before the game was suspended. Cristopher Castro started Monday, striking out nine in 4.1 innings pitched, with three walks and three hits, while Julio Ortiz closed out the game with a strikeout in his inning of work.

DSL Jays win in extra-innings

Toronto’s other rookie ball team, the Dominican Summer League Blue Jays, were also in action, defeating the DSL Arizona Black 5-4 in ten innings. Their record is now 5-4.

Like the FCL game, there were no long-balls for the DSL Jays, but Angel Guzmán hit his first professional triple and had a multi-hit game. Aldo Gaxiola, Dariel Ramon, and Randy Soto all had multi-hit games as well. If you’re wondering about Juarlin Soto, he didn’t have a hit, but he had three walks, while Endy Reyes had four. Moreover, Esmeiquel Arrieche had the team’s other single.

Eduar Gonzalez started the game for the DSL Jays, finishing with a line of 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K to bring his season ERA to 2.25. He’s someone worth monitoring as he climbs the minor league ladder. Rafael De Jesus gave up two earned runs in his inning of work, but Diego Dominguez struck out three and walked two in his two innings of work. Ramon Suarez blew the save and got the win, striking out four and allowing an earned run in three innings of work.

Call-ups Galore!

Late last night, the Blue Jays promoted Anders Tolhurst to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, kicking off a slew of roster moves. Tolhurst replaces Eric Pardinho in Double-A, as Pardinho has been promoted to Triple-A. Moreover, Orelvis Martinez was called up to the Toronto Blue Jays, with Brandon Eisert being sent down and replaced by Ryan Burr.

Anders Tolhurst was selected in the 2019 draft, but didn’t make his professional debut until 2022. After two seasons of “meh” performances, Tolhurst has been nothing short of phenomenal for the Canadians this season, posting a 1.73 ERA and a 2.10 FIP in 26 innings pitched, along with a 26.7 K% and a 4.8 BB%. Double-A will be a new challenge for the 26-year-old righty.

Eric Pardinho is a 23-year-old right-handed reliever and a former top 100 prospect. It’s been a breakout season for the Brazilian, pitching in relief for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats where he has a 1.01 ERA and a 2.25 FIP in 26.2 innings pitched. Over his last 22 innings pitched, or 17 games, he hasn’t given up an earned run and has a 40 K% over that time (34.9 K% for the season).

Everyone knows Orelvis Martinez. The 22-year-old has been the top Blue Jays power hitting prospect since the start of the 2022 season, and it hasn’t been close. This season, the top 100 prospect is slashing .260/.343/.523 with 16 homers in 269 plate appearances for a 119 wRC+. Of course those 16 homers lead the organization.

Setting up this week in “A” affiliate action

This week, the Dunedin Blue Jays and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats continue their homestand, while the Buffalo Bisons and the Vancouver Canadians head on the road.

Buffalo heads to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to face off against the RailRiders, who have a 40-29 record and an insanely dumb name. The gutted Bisons have a 35-34 record and Mike Mayers will start for Buffalo on Tuesday. At this point, they should turn their attention to the second half.

New Hampshire plays their second consecutive homestand, hosting the Reading Fightin Phils (take a guess who their parent club is), who have a 28-35 record, as do the Fisher Cats. Like Buffalo and the remaining “A” affiliate teams, the team’s focus should shift towards the second half. Deveraux Harrison starts for the Fisher Cats on Tuesday.

Vancouver lost their chance at winning the first half in their last series against Spokane, but the second half will begin during their series against the Tri-City Dust Devils, who have a league-worst 25-36 record. They’ll play two games on Tuesday, with Lazaro Estrada starting the first and Carson Pierce starting the second.

Dunedin kicks off the second straight series at TD Park, hosting the Daytona Tortugas (30-33) in an out-of-division match up. The D-Jays have been playing better as of late and have a 32-31 record, but are well out of the race for the division in the first half. Jorge Bautista will start for the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
