Windsor Goodfellows got a big boost Friday morning with a $10,000 donation from Mikhail Holdings.

“Our company always had a turkey giveaway every Christmas and last year was the last one so we decided instead of giving to the needy once a year, we’d kind of spread it out over the year,” said Lou Mikhail.

Mikhail said Windsor Police Chief Jason Bellaire reached out a couple weeks ago to let them know there was a need for funds at the charitable organization, which has a number of food and other programs for the needy.

“(Goodfellows) are wonderful in what they do,” Mikhail said. “They contribute to those in need all year long. A lot of people don’t realize this.

“We look at this as an opportunity to help them and help the community.”

Mikhail handed the $10,000 cheque to Goodfellows president Brian Beaumont during a presentation Friday at the Mikhail Holdings office in the CIBC building.

Mikhail said he hoped that by presenting the cheque publicly, more people will consider making donations to the organization.

“A lot of people want to give but they don’t know how,” he said, adding that seeing first hand the need and how the Goodfellows work is a great incentive for giving.

“We can’t thank you enough,” Beaumont said. “There’s a huge need, more so now than ever before.

“Last year our clientele rose 51 per cent in one year,” he said. “Now more than ever this donation goes a long, long way in helping us to sustain all the programs that we have.”

In addition to a year-round food bank, the Goodfellows offer a children’s footwear program, support a breakfast program for elementary school students and a lunch bag program for people experiencing homelessness.

Beaumont said at one point the Goodfellows were looking at making cuts to some of their programs but thanks to “donations like this, we won’t have to do that.

“Mikhail Holdings’ donation not only provides immediate relief in a time where we struggle to keep all of our programs going, but also sends a powerful message of solidarity and hope to those in need.”
