A 33-year-old Markham resident is facing multiple charges after he allegedly followed a woman into a washroom at the University of Toronto and recorded her over the stall with his phone.

Toronto Police say the alleged incident happened at about 10 p.m. on Feb. 7. The woman entered an all-female washroom on campus in the Spadina Avenue and Willcocks Street area in downtown Toronto.

Earlier this week, members of 52 Division Criminal Investigative Bureau executed a search warrant and made the arrest. They believe there may be more victims.

The man has been charged with fail to comply with a release order and voyeurism, which targets individuals who, for a sexual purpose, secretly observe or make a visual recording of a person in circumstances where there is an expectation of privacy, such as in changing rooms, bathrooms or private dwellings.

Indictable voyeurism offences can lead to a maximum penalty of five years in prison, while summary charges can lead to a maximum penalty of up to two years less a day in prison.

Depending on the circumstances and the judge’s decision, individuals convicted of voyeurism can also be placed on the national sex offender registry.
