The series will now shift to Swift Current for Game 3 on Tuesday night. Game 4 is set for Wednesday.

SJHL playoffs

The Humboldt Broncos and Melfort Mustangs are heading to Game 7 in their Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League semifinal after the Broncos recorded a 4-3 double overtime victory on Sunday night in Game 6.

Spencer Bell scored his eighth of the playoffs to force a deciding game, which will be played Tuesday night in Melfort.

The winner will then head to the SJHL finals, where they will face the Flin Flon Bombers, who swept the Battlefords Stars in the other semifinal.

Grand Slam of Curling

Mike McEwen and his Saskatchewan-based curling squad came up just short at the Grand Slam of Curling’s Players’ Championship on the weekend.

After putting together a 4-1 round robin record in the final slam event of the year, McEwen and company lost to Italy’s Joel Retornaz 6-5 in the semifinal. Retornaz would then lose to Canada’s Brad Gushue in the final.

While the rankings haven’t been finalized yet, with the points picked up at the event it appears McEwen will pre-qualify for the 2025 Montana’s Brier as one of the top teams on the Canadian Team Ranking System. If that’s the case, Saskatchewan could send two teams to the national championship in Kelowna next year, with the other coming through the provincial championship.

Roughriders add three

The Saskatchewan Roughriders added three more Americans to the roster ahead of training camp opening next month.

The Green and White came to terms with linebacker C.J. Avery, running back Kennedy Brooks and defensive back Antione Brooks Jr.

Brooks Jr. is a former sixth-round NFL pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who went on to play four games with the club before joining the Los Angeles Rams, where he won a Super Bowl. Last year, the 26-year-old played with the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons.

Avery, a University of Louisville product, attended training camp in 2022 with the NFL’s Chicago Bears before playing the 2023 season in the XFL.

Meanwhile, Brooks spent the 2022 season on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad before being released following camp in 2023. Before that, the 25-year-old rushed for 3,320 yards as a University of Oklahoma Sooner.
